Ethical Mining   Example   What to Do

Can Public Opinion be Improved? Yes.

I ask because some people are so against particular industries they cannot see the possibility of those industries operating ethically. We can overcome the negativity associated with your business. We can build support for your mining operation. Wouldn't be great to articles in the local papers about the good your mining company is doing? It's possible.

Why pay lawyers when you can just make simple changes?

I've spent a lot of time in the Appalachian region working around coal and coal bed methane producers. The companies I worked with were ethical. We did things that relly improved the public's view of our operations. I want to help your coal or CBM company improve your image with the public.

This can be a tricky subject

The country needs the energy. We've got a lot of coal under the ground in Appalachia and throughout the U.S. Digging the coal up, transporting and burning it is a nasty process. Digging it up destroys the land and water. Transporting it spreads harmful coal dust. Burning coal is the greatest world-wide contributor to greenhouse gases. In spite of all that, it is possible for a coal company to operate an ethical business. You've heard all the arguments against your business. Let's get some positive attention.

What if the company really made an effort to protect the land from destruction?

If a company really tried to do the "right thing" all of the time, would the public support such a company? You bet.

I believe there are coal mining companies operating right now that would be a lot more successful (profitable) if they would make some minor, though noticeable, attempts to be more "community friendly". Just some small changes would make a big difference. Then spread the word about all the good stuff your company is doing. The "image ads" run by the industry help. But I'm talking about building positive public relations for YOUR company. We'd accomplish this action, not just "advertising". We'd build allies in the community for YOUR business.

Hard work?

Yes.

Worth the effort?

Indeed. Wouldn't it be nice to get your next dig started with less opposition? Wouldn't  public support help greatly? Wouldn't it be nice to worry less about legal actions or EPA violations?

Where do we start?

You start by looking closely at your business and having the courage to change what needs changing. I can help with this.

Then what?

Your website. It doesn't cost much to let people know you are trying. Your website must tell the world you are doing good.

Next, it's important to work with your employees to let them know the company has a strong moral core. Costly violations are nearly always the result of laziness on the part of someone taking a shortcut.

One Simple Question

Do you think it's going to get easier or more difficult to be in the coal business? I think it's going to get a lot harder. A lot of people already put coal companies in the same category as cigarette manufacturers.

It can be done.

I'd like to work with you to help change some minds about coal. It will take some sacrifice, but I know the return is worth the cost.

We can start out free. I won't charge you anything for a couple of conversations. If you don't believe I'm on to something, we'll quit and you're out nothing. Deal?
